Icon A5

Let’s face it, if you love flying you have probably desired to have your very own aircraft at some point.  If you’re anything like me, you get easily discouraged when you start adding up the costs of fuel, maintenance, hangar fees, etc.  Well, I stumbled upon this little gem of an airplane that falls under the Light Sport Aircraft category and I found many of the costs prospective aircraft owners face can be minimized by getting into an aircraft such as the Icon A5.

Icon Aircraft was started by Kirk Hawkins, a former F-16 pilot for the U.S. Air Force and serial entrepreneur.  I like Kirk’s story for several reasons.  You have a guy who knows what it’s like to put 9Gs on an aircraft and can still appreciate sport flying.  He has a broad spectrum of interests (probably like most of us who fly) and has gone to great lengths to pursue them.

Up front the A5 will run you $139,000.  This will buy you a brand new, composite two-seat aircraft capable of carrying a useful load of 430-530 lbs…oh and you can park it in your garage next to your jet skis.

If you are not familiar with the Light Sport Aircraft designation, please read Wolf Emond’s articles on LSA: LSA Part 1 and LSA Part 2.
