The Republic F-84F “Thunderstreak” went into production in July 1950 and was operated by the United States Air Force and air forces around the world. This beast had a takeoff roll of 7,500 feet on a hot day! Although it had a powerful engine and excelled in high airspeed and high altitude regimes, it was an inherently unstable jet. Spins were essentially unrecoverable and ejection below 10,000 feet AGL was the only option for pilots who found themselves in a spin.
Aviation photographer Bill Fauth took this photo when he stumbled across this beautiful aircraft sunning itself in overgrown Mercer Airfield (GA65). Thanks for the pic Bill!
