Viper Burnin’

F-16 Engine Run

Early Morning F-16 Engine Run

Edwards Airmen perform an early morning “burner-run” following an augmenter fuel pump change on an F-16D. Running the engine in afterburner is the only way to verify that the replaced pump will function properly in flight and not leak. In this case the General Electric F110-GE-100 engine was run up from idle to full afterburner several times and the system was inspected between each cycle.

The F-16 is officially dubbed the “Fighting Falcon”, however pilots and maintainers affectionately refer to the jet as the “Viper” based on its uncanny resemblance to the fighter of the same name appearing in the sci-fi series Battlestar Galactica.
